Getting & Keeping Beautiful Skin

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

In my post on Dry Brushing your skin, we learned that our skin is the largest organ of the body.  Knowing that, it makes sense to protect it and maintain it well.  I believe that beautiful skin starts from the inside and if our skin is taken care of from the inside first, the exterior maintenance will be much easier.

How do you eat for good skin? What works for me is keeping it simple and I’m reminded of the phrase, Garbage In, Garbage Out. If we constantly dump garbage into our bodies, we will be rewarded with dull, dry, flaky skin or oily skin plagued with break outs long after we should have outgrown acne.

Age does not automatically mean we give up great skin.   In fact, as we learn better ways to treat our skin, it will return the favor by looking great.

As we age, I think less is more and when it comes to make-up, this is especially true.  Heavy, caked-on make-up adds years to our age, while beautiful skin gives a much more youthful, healthy appearance.

My 5 tips to get and keep beautiful skin:

  1. Avoid processed foods, fried foods & cured meats
  2. Get 9-12 servings of fruits & vegetables daily
  3. Eat Healthy Oils
  4. Eliminate sodas & drink the recommended amount of water daily
  5. Keep skin clean, don’t sleep in make- up & moisturize morning & night

A Fitness Resolution to Make Now

Get Your Best Body is committed to helping you get fit and healthy. There is really no reason to be deprived all the time or to wait until New Year’s to make a resolution to get in your best shape.  So, today I’ve got a surprise for you.

A mentor of mine, Steve Siebold has a controversial perspective on fat and fitness. Steve is a world renowned keynote speaker, author and coach and after losing 40 pounds in 12 weeks, he has really simplified the weight loss process in an in-your-face, but simple way.

Mental Toughness Public Speaker & Expert

Steve wrote a book called, “Die Fat or Get Tough,…if you’re fat, it’s your fault.” Let me say that you either love or hate Steve. There is no in-between. His trademark is Mental Toughness and he teaches that every success comes because of how our minds are trained and what we train ourselves to believe.

One of my favorite quotes from Steve is “It’s not about being comfortable, it’s about being successful.” That is a mouthful, but I believe it’s true. We all make excuses or rationalize why we do or don’t do things, especially when it comes to getting in shape.

Sometimes we blame our thyroid, our age, we’ve had multiple births, we don’t have time, we work two jobs, our spouse doesn’t motivate us, we don’t like or have time to exercise, you name it, we’ve used it.

But, if want to be successful, sometimes we must just suck it up and go for it.  If you’re ready, check out Mr. Siebold’s interview and the book.  It’ll make you laugh, it might make you cry and it just might make you get on the road to getting that body back.

Here is a short video clip where you see Steve on the Today Show talking about “Die Fat or Get Tough.” Check it out here!

HOW TO Dry Brush for Healthier, Softer Skin

In a previous post, I wrote about Dry Brushing and how it could help detox your body, improve circulation and a host of other benefits.  There are some additional techniques that will help you once you begin.  This post will show you HOW to dry brush and just how easy it is to get started.

Remember to brush DRY skin and make this a part of your regular routine.  You start with a natural bristle brush.  Synthetic bristles are way too harsh for your skin and may cause undue irritation – go with the natural brush.   Use firm, gentle pressure and generally work in the direction of your heart.  Here are the simple HOW TO steps:

  1. Legs – Start with your right foot, lightly brush upward and to your legs
  2. Stomach – Gently brush using a clockwise, circular motion
  3. Buttocks – Go right to left using a circular motion and upward strokes
  4. Hands/Arms – Start with the right side and use same process as with yourlegs
  5. Breast Area – Gently brush with a figure 8 motion
  6. Ribs – Brush from the top down to the waist
  7. Back/Neck – Work downward horizontally or with a circular motion

This whole process should only take 5 minutes and will slough off dead skin cells and dirt, so you start your bath or shower with cleaner skin.

Rinse with warm water and if you really want to kick up your circulation, alternate warm and cool water showers, ending with cool.  There you have it.  For more complete instructions and additional information on the benefits of Dry Brushing, Visit This Cool Site.

I tried this technique, it works and makes you feel like you’ve been to a spa!  Great way to start 2011 -

Happy ThanksGiving

Wishing my readers & visitors a Happy and safe ThanksGiving.   This blog is devoted to help you GetYourBestBody.   Since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I’m going to share some of our traditional family foods.  Admittedly, some of the dishes take me off track, but if I follow my own advice and drink water before meals and watch portion size, I’ll be ok.   I plan for this day, because I don’t expect all of my efforts to be in vain.  So, here is a snap shot of my ideal ThanksGiving Day meal.

My family usually has a Honey-Baked Ham as well for those pork lovers.  My favorite part of the meal though, is the side dishes.  I like them a certain way because it brings back memories of growing up with some country-cooking aunts and cousins and a great grandma who baked the best goodies without measuring anything.  Side dish #1 is the famous Macaroni & Cheese.

You must know I’m not talking about just any old macaroni and cheese, but the kind made with all real ingredients,3 cheeses and seasoned bread crumbs for the topping.  The crunchier, the better.

Our family meal wouldn’t be complete without Southern Style Greens, seasoned with leeks and sometimes smoky ham.  My one time a year indulgence.  If you are a fan of Greens, you will absolutely love these.

Greens are one of those foods that taste great and are good for you.  If you leave a reply with contact information, I’ll send you my family recipe.  You’ll love it.

Another staple for our family is cornbread stuffing.  This is one of my comfort foods and with the right compliment of Giblet Gravy, I could eat the stuffing with a generous portion of cranberries.  The stuffing is “stuffed” with onions, celery, mushrooms, sausage, peppers, and of course seasoned corn bread.

This is another favorite and the stuffing can be dressed up endlessly by adding things like nuts, olives, oysters, cranberries, raisins, chopped crab or shrimp.  Extra vegetables makes this a fairly healthy dish while maintaining the flavor.

My family always has candied yams, but not the kind with the marshmallows on top.  Ours are different and I flavor them with orange juice, chopped red pepper flakes and top them with a walnut topping.  Different, but a great compliment to the other dishes and not as sweet as the marshmallow traditional dish.candied yams

We are a vegetable loving family and love to add green beans.  Again, we don’t do the typical casserole with the French Onion Rings & mushroom soup, although I do like that dish.

Our beans are done southern style, with smoked ham hocks or some other smoky meat, hot sauce and lots of finely chopped onions.  Sometimes, small new potatoes are added to the green beans making this more like a casserole that can serve as a main dish.southern style green beans

The final part of our meal is the dessert and our favorite is Sweet Potato Pie.  We’re not big fans of pumpin pies, but we are all over the Sweet Potato.  That’s what I grew up with and I think the flavor is richer.

An added bonus is that sweet potatoes are really good for us, provide fiber and other rich nutrients.  The smell of baking pies is the absolute best.  I found a fitting picture & here it is…

When you add cinnamon and nutmeg to the pie and get that lightly toasted crust, nothing is better.  Sometimes, we add pecan pies and southern style banana pudding or peach cobbler.  But, I think I’ve done enough damage.

After all this writing about the perfect ThanksGiving Dinner, guess what?  I don’t have to cook this year.  My husband just telephoned and told me, our good friend, April invited us over for dinner.  So, I have something else to be thankful about…and that is I’m thankful I don’t have to spend the day in the kitchen.  OOPS – Almost forgot the gravy, but here it is:

Gotta love that girl.  So enjoy your day, your dinner and your friends & family.  Back to getting your best body – after Thanksgiving.

Tips on Dry Brushing Your Way to Your Best Body

Did you think I was losing it when I titled this post, Tips on Brushing Your Way to Your Best Body?  Well, I’m not crazy.  In fact, skin brushing was recommended by Finnish Dr., Paavo Airola for more than 30 years.  Skin brushing is used in European spas to improve your body’s appearance and to improve your health at the same time.

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in the body?  It is and performs  some very important jobs like removing cellulite, removing dead skin layers, stimulating our hormones and strengthening our immune system.

Brushing & Detoxification

Research shows that our skin eliminates more than 1 pound of waste acids each day, mainly through our sweat glands.  What if you could use skin brushing to eliminate more waste?  You can and tone your muscles, help digest your food and slow down aging by giving you softer, younger looking skin.

Skin Brushing & the Right Foods

Once you begin a program of Skin Brushing, adding the right foods gives you a winning combination that moves food through your system before it produces toxic results like cellulite and nervous system problems.  Right foods include fresh, dark, gren leafy veggies, tomatoes, berries and dark chocolate.  Doesn’t sound too bad.  Add massage, (Oooh) and consistent exercise and you’ve got a recipe for Your Best Body.

One of the best resources I know of on the Dry Brusing Technique is on a fantastic blog by Dr. Denice Moffat.  Click Here To Get the Technique Next post I’ll show you the How To tricks to benefit from this practice.
